Carl Adams has been a multispecies guide in the Blackduck area for 19+ years.  He specializes in walleye, northern, muskie and panfish, and fishes all the lakes between Leech Lake to the south and Red Lake to the north( including the Cass Lake area, Bemidji area, and Blackduck area lakes). He fishes out of a Ranger 620t with a Yamaha motor.

The walleye bite has been a little tougher on many of the area lakes. Though Big Lake and Island have still had good bites going on them. Panfish have also continued to bite on most of the area lakes.

Walleye season has been open for over a week. With Upper Red Lake having a great bite and most other lakes being a little slow for this time of year. The next few weeks should bring even better walleye fishing as water temps climb. The crappie have already begun to move shallow with a good bite on many of the area lakes. Bluegills have been a little slow but should just get better as the weather warms

Blackduck Lake:  Still has a good bite going on.  Evolving more into a true summer bite, where the fish are on the mid-lake structure and biting on leeches and crawlers.  Live bait rigs or spinners have been productive.  Fish are catchable during the day, though the inconsistent weather has kept the bite fairly inconsistent.

Gull Lake:   Has had a tremendous bluegill bite going on in the deeper cabbage weeds, with 9 to 10 inchers being caught.  Walleyes and northerns biting in the same area.  Great lake to put a gumdrop floater and a leech and catch many species.

Island Lake:  Great bite still going on.  Live bait rigs with leeches, crawlers, or redtails have been producing good numbers of slot fish, and keepers can be found.

Other Lakes:  This time of year bug hatches will start to happen and slow down fishing for days at time.  The bigger lakes like Winni and Leech tend to have bigger hatches, but fishing will be very good when the bugs are not hatching.  Smaller lakes in the area will have consistent bites with multi species and are a great alternative.

Blackduck Lake:   Walleye fishing has remained very good.  Most fish have been 16 to 19 inches with limits being caught.  Mornings and evenings have been the most consistent, but frequently there will be a tremendous day bite that can happen at any time.  Leeches and crawlers have been the preferred bait on with either a slip bobber or live bait rig.  A very strong crankbait bite has also been going on right before dark.   Fish have been in12 to 20 ft in the day time and move shallower at dark.

Red Lake:  Fishing has been a little slower than what Red lake can be.  Though still better on most days than other lakes the strong winds have kept the lake stained, and the fishing average. A few days of calm weather would be the cure and bite would be back to excellent.  Anchoring and jigging or bobber fishing has still been productive.  Also the crankbait bite can be very good.  Fish have still been in the shallows, so concentrate your efforts between 2 and 8 ft.

Island lake:  This lake has been one of the hottest around since season began.  With good year classes of all sizes being caught.  It has been a lot of fun, and you can still catch fish for the frying pan.  Most methods have been working with the majority of fish coming from 10 to 20 ft of water.

Leech Lake:  Another super hot lake.  Low light conditions are best, so mornings, evenings or windy days.  Jigs and shiners, rigs & leeches or crawlers , and crankbaits have all been very productive.

Other area lakes:  The smaller panfish lakes are having their peak bite right now.  Crappies and bluegills have biting extremely well on any of the lakes that have them.  Many of these lakes also have an under-fished walleye population.  So the guys in smaller boats have an excellent opportunity to fish walleyes on even the windy days.  This area also has some tremendous bass  fishing with rarely any fishing pressure.  They can be caught at almost any time.

Cooler weather has kept water temps in the low 50′s. Crappies have been continuing to hit just off their beds in 6 to 12 feet of water on most lakes with a decent population.  This weekends walleye opener should be excellent, with walleyes being hard to keep off the hook when trying to catch crappies.  Good choices for opener would be Red lake or Blackduck as both are traditionally good opening day lakes and have had excellent walleye bites for the guys out their crappie fishing.

The warmer water temps have made crappie fishing excellent recently.  The recent blackduck ice out crappie tournament, that allow fishing on any area lake, was a great success with over 200 crappies caught & weighed  by about 30 fisherman.  My stringer was the heaviest with the crappies averaging 1 pound seven ounces.

The nice weather has the lakes surface temps a good month ahead of time.  Meaning all species of fish are biting well, though season is not yet open for walleye or northern.
